1. Represent the client
We understand the client business lexicon from those in the business. As recruiters, we believe a primary challenge is to understand the nature of the client’s area of work. This understanding helps us to gain a better appreciation of the position and is critical in engagement with a potential candidate. To ensure this understanding, we invest time in accessing secondary information on the sector, leverage on the multi-sector experience of our staff, engage with client resources and where required engage with external resources who bring a sector specific understanding.
2. Invest in understanding the position
We invest with the client in the brief. The process involves our seeking inputs to complete our position description form and also gaining an understanding on the nature of the client organization’s sector of operations, the state of the sector environment, the growth contours and emerging challenges. The position description form requests for a range of information on the position needs and among others, the responsibilities of the position, the organization structure and the role of the position within, the core deliverables of the position, the professional competencies and personal traits that are essential and desired for the position. These and other queries help us gain a deeper appreciation of the client’s area of work and the position requirements.
3. Live the brief
Our internal briefing meeting is the start of a team commitment to visualize the candidate. We follow a multi-stage process to review and refine till each member of our team gets a sound sense of knowing whom we are looking for, and even more a sense of knowing who may not have an appropriate fit for the position.
4. Understand the unique binder
We have found that a linear response to a position profile may get a suitable candidate but often may not bring an enduring asset for the client. Much more than a position profile, it is the likely fit into the unique promise of a position that governs our definition of the unique binder. To try and get the closest we can to this, we work with our clients to understand on the kind of people who thrive in the organization; the many different balances that may exist unique to the organization such as, the balance between process led and intuitive responses, between intraprenerurs and those who consolidate; the one or more aspects that are unique to the client organization or the work culture and key personality traits that would make for the best fit.
5. Know the candidate
We believe in ensuring a continuing dialog with a candidate that often goes beyond the position brief. The relationship built with a candidate is often the critical lever that enables candidates to share real concerns that finally affect the decision to join. These concerns are often not articulated in normative discussions on the position and may be likely to come up at a stage when most of the screening engagement has been completed. Further, the approach to get to know the candidate helps us to continue engagement with the candidate during the on-boarding process and assist in the candidate settling into the new role
6. Finding enduring assets
Our approach is to consistently seek candidates who are likely to have a long-term fit. To do so, we seek to understand the candidate’s prior record and the nature of engagement that the candidate is seeking in the intended role. Our conversations with a candidate aim on professional aspects of the intended role are competency based and lead from the competencies mapped for the role and within the organization. We follow a process of multiple conversations to enable capturing the range of thoughts that may not be expressed in a single conversation in context of these aspects. Some of the many aspects that we assess in the candidate’s prior record is the consistency of the employment record, role enhancement in prior stints, achievements on key responsibilities and the alignment of prior roles with the intended role as a career fit. Further, in the screening engagement with the candidate we seek to gain clarity on the candidate’s construct of the intended role. To do so, we converse to gain an understanding of the extent to which the candidate views the role as a long-term career asset, the clarity on areas of interest, the perceived learning and gain from the intended role, the appreciation of risks in context of career goals and the balance of expectations across aspects such as, compensation and job profile or organization equity and role equity. Above all we seek to understand the approach of the candidate to address key career incidents, the degree of clarity expressed and the realism in responses.
